Barn Fire On CR 27
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Fire Chief Robert Crowe
February 9, 2023

Members were completing their annual SCBA refresher training when they were dispatched to a reported barn fire at 6600 CR 27 at 2024 hours. Engine 7, Engine 8, Rescue 1, Tanker 20, and Rescue 36 were all enroute at 2026. Assistant Chief Shawn McGregor was advised that the fire was threatening the house, whereupon he activated the Tanker Task Force. All the Canton apparatus arrived on scene at 2029 and members began stretching handlines to protect the house and begin suppression operations, as well as set up porta-tanks for the large water supply operation that would be needed. The Tanker Task Force brought tankers from Morley Fire, Rennselaer Falls Fire, West Potsdam Fire, and Madrid Fire with Potsdam Fire filling in at Canton Station. Given the large volume of fire encountered additional tankers from Potsdam Fire and Lisbon Fire were requested to the scene. Operations were initially hampered somewhat by the presence of a downed power line that was arcing in the front yard. Personnel isolated this area until National Grid was able to arrive and disconnect the power line at the pole. The barn suffered a collapse relatively early in the incident resulting in a labor intensive operation to expose and extinguish hidden pockets of fire. Additional personnel were moved up to the scene from standby companies with members from West Potsdam, Potsdam, and Norwood providing assistance. Firefighters were able to extinguish the majority of the fire with some hot spots remaining under the collapsed debris and inaccessible until the structure is able to be pulled apart by machinery. Firefighters were released from the scene shortly after 0030 hours and spent 2 additional hours at the station putting equipment back in service and washing hose.

Canton Fire had 33 members respond to the incident and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries. The owner had 10 cows and 2 horses, as well as numerous cats perish in the fire. The barn was a total loss. Members were able to prevent any extension to the residence. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team.
