Residential Brush Burning Ban Takes Effect Tomorrow
Fire Chief Robert Crowe, March 15
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced the annual statewide ban prohibiting residential brush burning begins March 16 and runs through May 14. Since 2009, DEC has enforced the annual brush burning ban to prevent wildfires and protect communities during heightened conditions for wildfires.

Barn Fire On CR 27

Members were completing their annual SCBA refresher training when they were dispatched to a reported barn fire at 6600 CR 27 at 2024 hours. Engine 7, Engine 8, Rescue 1, Tanker 20, and Rescue 36 were all enroute at 2026. Multiple 911 calls for a house on fire at 6069 US Highway 11, just north of the underpass. Canton Fire, Canton Rescue, and SLC Car 4 were dispatched at 0841 hours. Sgt. Cole from the Canton Police Department was on scene momentarily and confirmed that there was flames and smoke visible. Overturned Canoe Prompts Investigation

On November 17th at approximately 1629 hours, Canton Fire and Canton Rescue, along with local law enforcement, were dispatched to reports of an overturned canoe trapped on the water falls. Members Complete Interior Firefighting Operations

Two members have completed the NYS OFPC SCBA/Interior Firefighting Operations course. This approximately 50 hour course increases the firefighter's knowledge by building on the material taught to them in the Basic Exterior Firefighter Operations Course. Members of the Canton Fire Department have completed their final modules in the Hazardous Materials Technician level courses. This offering is comprised of 5 modules ranging from 8 hours to 24 hours for a total of almost 84 hours of training. Statewide Residential Brush Burning Restrictions To End

The NYS DEC residential brush burning restrictions are slated to end on Saturday, May 14th at 11:59 PM. Residents of the Town of Canton are reminded that a burn permit is required for any open burning (aside from cooking and camp fires). There is no cost for the permit. Canton Fire Retains ISO Class 3 Rating

Following a review in November of 2021, the Insurance Services Office (ISO) recently notified the Canton Fire Department that it has been giving an Public Protection Classification of 3/3Y.
