Canton Fire, Canton Rescue, and SLC Car 4 were alerted at 0803 for a reported house fire at 55 Meaded Road. Initial reports were for a fire in an attached garage. First Assistant Chief McGregor was responding within minutes and requested activation of the Tanker Task Force 1st alarm which would bring 4 tankers, a draft engine, and an engine to standby at Canton Station. Engine 7 was enroute at 0809. Chief McGregor arrived on scene and reported a working fire that had engulfed the garage and had extended into the house. Engine 7 arrived on scene at 0814, with crews stretching lines into the house in an attempt to stop the spread of fire within the structure. As additional personnel arrived, they were put to work with additional lines, performing ventilation, and establishing water supply. The bulk of the fire was knocked down however it had made its way into the void spaces in the mid-1800's farm house. This proved stubborn and required and extensive overhaul operation to ensure all fire had been extinguished. There were no injuries and the American Red Cross was requested to assist the resident of the home. The area of origin of the fire was determined to be in the vicinity of the outdoor wood boiler that had been located in the attached structure. Seventeen members responded and all Canton units were back in service at 1356.
