The Canton Fire Department is saddened by news of the passing of past member Brett Grandaw. Brett is the brother of FF Robert "Bugsy" Grandaw Jr. and was currently serving as First Assistant Chief of the Pierrepont Fire Department and as a NYS Fire Instructor. Our condolences go out to Brett's family and friends.

COLTON - A Mass of Christian Burial for Brett D. Grandaw, 55, will be celebrated Tuesday 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Canton with Rev. Bernard Menard, celebrating. A private family interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton.
Friends may call Monday 1-4:00 PM and 7-9:00 PM at the Seymour Funeral Home, 4 Cedar Street, Potsdam. Mr. Grandaw passed away Wednesday morning, November 18, 2015 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past 2 weeks.

Brett was born April 7, 1960 in Canton, New York the son of Robert E. Sr. and Dorothy Holmes Grandaw. He attended St. Mary’s Parochial School in Canton and graduated from Canton Central School in 1978. He graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Paramedics and later from the State University of New York at Canton with a degree in Mortuary Science.

Brett dedicated his life to public community service. As a firefighter and paramedic, his service started with Canton Fire Department. He later worked for Hyannis Fire Department for 23 years and was currently the First Assistant Chief of Pierrepont Volunteer Fire Department, and was also a NYS Fire Instructor. In addition, he worked with FEMA for 17 years, was active in the rescue and recovery during 9/11 at the World Trade Center and also during the bombings in Atlanta during the Olympics. As a funeral director, Brett became part of the Seymour Funeral Home family in 2006 as a Licensed Funeral Director.

Brett is survived by his children, Samuel and Natalie Grandaw; his parents, Robert and Dorothy of Canton; his brother, Robert Jr. and Susan Grandaw of Canton; his niece and nephew, Erin and Charles Grandaw; his loving companion, Lori Smith of Colton; his stepson, Derick; four aunts, several cousins, and his brotherhood of friends in fire service.
