By 1st Assistant Fire Chief Robert Crowe
December 21, 2009

The tones dropped at 1530 hours for a reported possible house fire at 605 Miner Street Road. Second Assistant Chief Erik Johnson was enroute immediately and requested a Tanker Task Force first alarm for that zone to get water on the road to the scene. St. Lawrence County Central Dispatch advised that they were receiving calls that it was a working fire. Chief Johnson requested additional tankers form Morley Fire and DeKalb Junction Fire to the scene and an engine from Morley to the hydrant on Miner Street at the Appleton Arena parking lot to fill tankers. Upon arrival, Chief Johnson found two-story wood frame dwelling with heavy fire conditions throughout the first floor and thick black smoke boiling out of the second floor. Engine 6 dropped its porta-tank at the road and laid 5" LDH up the 200 foot driveway to the fire building. Pyrites Fire ETA-90 was the second arriving engine and established the dump site to supply the 5" to Engine 6. An aggressive attack was mounted against the rapidly moving fire however the fire had gained a significant hold on the structure causing major damage. Additional personnel from all responding departments were requested to the scene. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries, although two dogs perished in the fire.

St. Lawrence County Emergency Service Director / Fire Coordinator Martin J. Hassett responded to the scene as the acting District Deputy Coordinator. National Grid and the Town of Canton Highway Department also were on scene to provide assistance. The investigation of the fire was turned over to the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team with Car 30, Brian Sullivan and Car 18, Jerry Wilson, leading the investigation. All Canton units were back in service at 2024 hours.

Units: Engine 6, Tanker 20, Rescue 1, Ambulance 13X
