At 2357 hours Canton Fire was dispatched on a mutual aid call to Gouverneur Fire to 1751 USH 11 in the town of Gouverneur for a barn fire. Tower 1 and Engine 8 were enroute at 0006 hours covering the 25 miles to the scene in 25 minutes in a torrential downpour. Gouverneur Fire Chief Steve Young (11-1) assigned the tower to set up for master stream operations on the south end of the scene upon their arrival. Engine 8 established a two porta tank dump site to feed the Tower. At the height of the firefight there were aerial master streams in place from Canton Tower 1 and Gouverneur Truck 2, as well as numerous 1 3/4" and 2 1/2" handlines. The water was supplied via tanker shuttles from the Villages of Gouverneur and Richville. Tankers from St. Lawrence County included Gouverneur Fire, Hermon Fire, Richville Fire, DeKalb Junction Fire, Edwards Fire, and tractor trailers from Morristown Fire and Heuvelton Fire. Oxbow Fire from Jefferson County and Harrisville Fire from Lewis County also provided tankers. Firefighters were having difficulties extinguishing the blaze, due to the thousands of bales of fresh hay on fire and the roof having already collapsed on them. After over four hours of battling the blaze, the fire was sufficiently knocked down to await the arrival of an excavator to remove pieces of the barn and spread out the hay to extinguish the rest of the buried fire. All Canton units were back in service at 0449 hours. Units from Gouverneur Fire remained on scene for most of the day while the demolition process was taking place.
