On Friday, January 30, 2009 FF/EMT Mark Davis of the Cape Vincent Fire Department in Jefferson County was shot and killed while on an ambulance call in the Village of Cape Vincent. The Canton Fire Department received a request from Fire Protection Specialist Scott Edkin of NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control via the St. Lawrence County Fire Coordinator Martin Hassett to provide a rescue company to standby on Friday February 6th for a 12 hour shift so that the Cape Vincent Fire Department could be placed out of service to attend calling hours and prepare for the funeral the next day. Members of Canton Fire stepped forward to provide this assistance to their fellow firefighters in Cape Vincent. Rescue 1, staffed by 1st Assistant Chief Robert Crowe, 3rd Assistant Chief Brian McCluskey, and Firefighters Shawn McGregor, Eric Walraven, Jon Pease, and Steve DeSantis. The Canton Fire contingent stood by from 8 AM – 8 PM at the Cape Vincent Town Barn, along with engine companies from Morristown Fire and Richville Fire, while the fire station was being used for the calling hours.
We would like to thank Cape Vincent Highway Department for their hospitality, our navigators, and Bud, who stayed with us all day long to make sure we were taken care of and didn't lack for anything. Our members, along with those from Morristown and Richville, were honored to be able to provide this support to our brothers and sisters in the Cape Vincent Fire Department as well as TIERS Ambulance and Guilfoyle Ambulance at this very difficult and tragic time.
