For the second time in less than three hours Canton Fire and Rescue responded to an MVA. St. Lawrence County Central Dispatch tripped the tones at 2200hrs. for a reported car vs. pedestrian with a possible gas leak from one of the vehicles on Park Street near the Owen D. Young Library. Central Dispatch gave further information that there was a bicyclist involved with unknown injuries and fluid leaking from the vehicle on-scene that was believed to be antifreeze. Engine 7, Rescue 1, and Ambulance 133 were enroute at 22:04. Canton Assistant Chiefs Erik Johnson and Brian McCluskey were first on scene at the accident in front of 68 Park Street and advised that the accident was a traffic hazard and no extrication was required. Crews from Engine 7 and Rescue 1 secured the scene and proceeded with removing the wreckage and cleaning up the spilled fluids from the vehicles involved in the accident. A car had rear ended an SUV while the SUV was stopped at the crosswalk to allow the bicyclist to cross. The damage to the SUV was moderate but rendered the vehicle undrivable. Both vehicles were required to be removed from scene by wrecker. A passenger in the SUV complained of back pain and was transported to the hospital for evaluation. Both of the drivers, as well as the bicyclist, refused medical treatment. SLU EMS units were also on scene and provided assistance to Canton Fire/Rescue units. Canton PD handled the accident investigation and were assisted on scene by St. Lawrence University Security and St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department.
During the cleanup of the MVA a vehicle drove up with a female passenger enroute to the hospital complaining of chest pain. A second ambulance was requested to scene and Ambulance 131 responded with a full ALS crew. That patient was transported to Canton Potsdam Hospital.
All Canton units were back in service at 2301hrs.
