Canton Fire Responds To Working Garage Fire

By 1st Assistant Fire Chief Robert Crowe
August 26, 2008

Central Dispatch dropped the tones at 1056 hours for a possible structure fire on County Route 15 approximately 1 mile off US Highway 11. Assistant Chief Erik Johnson was enroute immediately. Central advised they had received a number of calls on this fire and it appeared to be a garage burning. Chief Johnson immediately requested an engine, tanker , and manpower from DeKalb Junction Fire and Rennselaer Falls Fire due to the location of the call within our district. Dispatch then advised that a NYSP car was on scene reporting a working garage fire with exposures. Engine 6 and Tanker 20 were enroute at 1059 hours. The officer on scene, Trooper Rob Larrabee (a CFD member), then advised that the fire was beginning to extend to the exposure, a small wood frame dwelling. Chief Johnson also activated the Tanker Task Force for that zone, bringing tankers from Dekalb Junction Fire, Rennselaer Falls Fire, Pyrites Fire, Hermon Fire, Heuvelton Fire, and Morley Fire with Potsdam Fire sending an engine to Canton Station for standby. DeKalb Junction units were the first to arrive on scene, finding a fully involved 30 X 60 garage and smoke coming from the exposure. The stretched two handlines and began fighting the fire and protecting the exposure. Canton units arrived at 1108 hours and worked with the firefighters from Dekalb and Rennselaer Falls to extinguish the fire. An extesive overhaul operation was undertaken to knock out all the remaining hot spots. All units were back in quarters at 1253 hours with no injuries reported. The garage and its contents were a total loss and were uninsured. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Units: Engine 6 (FF Steve DeSantis), Engine 8 (FF William McCluskey), Tanker 20 (FF William Bennett), Rescue 1 (FF Pat McCluskey), Ambulance 132 (FF Charles Gray)

Mutual Aid: DeKalb Junction Fire, Rennselaer Falls Fire, Morley Fire, Heuvelton Fire, Hermon Fire, Pyrites Fire, Potsdam Fire
