At 0914 hours, St. Lawrence County Central Dispatch dropped the tones for a reported one vehicle rollover on Miner Street in the village near the intersection with Pine Street. Canton 4-3, Assistant Chief Erik Johnson, arrived on scene shortly thereafter to find a vehicle on its drivers side with one person pinned in the driver's seat and advised Canton Station that extrication would be required. Rescue 1 was first to arrive at 0923 hours and the crew quickly stabilized the vehicle, which was resting on its driver side, using the Rescue 42 Struts. At the same time the back window was removed and FF/AEMT-CC Adam Leggett made entry for C-spine stabilization and to assess the patient. The patient had minor injuries but due to previous back and neck problems could not be safely extricated without cutting the roof of the car off. Firefighter Tim Gavin removed the windshield while Firefighter Eric Walraven used the hydraulic cutters to cut the posts along with others using the sawzalls. The roof was partially removed and then folded down to facilitate access to the patient. The patient stayed very calm during the extrication process, having an idea of what to expect thanks to a mock DWI demonstration she had observed while she was in high school. The patient was extricated in 20 minutes, placed on a backboard and transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital. All fire units were back in service at 1026 hours. Traffic control assistance was provided at the scene by Canton Police, SUNY Canton University Police, St. Lawrence University Security, and New York State Police. Chief Dan Gavin of the Owego Fire Department, visiting for the day, assisted at the scene with the extrication of the patient.
