At 1753 hours Canton Fire, Canton Rescue, and County Car 4 were dispatched to the residence across from 25 Dies Street for a reported house fire. Assistant Chief McGregor (4-2) went enroute and was advised by Canton PD officer on scene that they had a working fire. Captain Gavin arrived and gained access to the house and performed a quick primary search of the first floor to verify no one was home prior to the arrival of apparatus. CPD officer LaSala was able to remove two dogs from the residence. Chief McGregor arrived on scene and requested Potsdam Fire respond on the auto-aid with Tower 5 as Canton Tower 1 is out of service for repairs. Engine 6 responded at 1758, arriving two minutes later with Engine 8, Rescue 1, and Rescue 36 arriving shortly thereafter. Crews advanced hose lines into the house to suppress the fire while additional responding personnel laddered the building and ventilated the roof. Personnel also began a salvage operation of items on the first floor, removing personal property to the outside of the building. Tower 5 arrived, backed down the dead end street and put the aerial in service to the roof. Crews were on scene for several hours, returning to service at 2145 hours. There were no injuries. The home suffered significant damage to the second floor and roof. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the SLC Fire Investigation Team.
