Members of the Canton community gathered at the Canton VFW Post 1231 on Gouverneur Street to enjoy a good bowl of chili and support the Canton Fire Department, raising $290.00. Paul Mitchell, Editor of the St. Lawrence Plaindealer, has organized this event in conjunction with the Canton Winterfest activities for all of its 16 years of existence. Each year, the proceeds of the Chili Cook Off are donated to the Canton Fire Department. Mr. Mitchell estimates that the total that has been raised over the 16 years is over $3500.00. Mr. Mitchell has been an ardent supporter of the Canton Fire Department and was awarded the fire department's Herb Haven Award for his outstanding dedication to the Canton community.
