October 20, 2007

At 2148 hrs the tones dropped for a two car MVA at the intersection of SH 68 and Cornell Drive at the entrance to SUNY Canton. St. Lawrence County Central Dispatch advised that there was personal injury at that scene. 1st Assistant Chief Robert Crowe was the first to arrive on scene and established command. Evaluation of the scene found five patients out of the two involved vehicles with various complaints and one patient still in rear seat of the red car complaining of back and neck pain. The initial response of Engine 6, Ambulance 133, and Rescue 1 arrived on scene at 2152 hours. After determining the number of patients to be transported, Command requested that Ambulances 132 and 131 respond to the scene as well as an ambulance from Rennselaer Falls Fire and Rescue. Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad was placed on standby at their station. Crews from Engine 6 and Rescue 1 began removing the roof of the car containing the patient while EMS personnel provided stabilization and preparing to extricate. Additional EMS personnel, with the aid of firefighters, evaluated and packaged the remaining patients for transport. All fire units were back in service at 2243 hours. SUNY Canton PD investigated the accident with traffic control assistance provided by Canton PD, NY State Police, and the SLC Sheriff's Department.
