CFD Mourns the Loss of Past Chief Emerson Forbes

By Fire Chief Robert Crowe
November 11, 2012

It is with great sadness that the Canton Fire Department announces the passing of its senior member, Past Chief Emerson Forbes. Past Chief Forbes joined the fire department on December 4, 1941. Shortly afterward he served his country in the US Army in World War II. He served as Chief of Department from 1965-1969 and as Treasurer of the Rural Fund from 1970-1983. Emerson was St. Lawrence County Deputy Coordinator for District 1 (Car 4) from 1961-2001. Emerson also was St. Lawrence County's first State Fire Instructor and trained many of the long serving members of the St. Lawrence County fire service. At an age when many would slow down and enjoy retirement, Emerson continued to contribute to the fire department. As the elder statesman of the morning "Coffee Crew" he could often be found imparting words of wisdom to new firefighters. The chiefs who have followed him have all benefitted from his advice both on the fire scene and in the administration of the department.

Arrangements are with the Lawrence Funeral Home. Calling hours will be Wednesday, November 14 th from 4-8 PM with a Firefighter's Service at 7:45. The funeral will be held at the Presbyterian Church on Thursday November 15th at 11 AM.
