The members of Canton Fire/Rescue that responded to this incident got an early start to their Friday morning as tones dropped shortly after 4am for a trailer fire in Champion Trailer Park on USH 11 north of the village. Many thoughts go through a firefighter's head when they hear "trailer fire". Usually those thoughts include total loss, defensive fire, surround and drown, fast moving fire, anyone still inside doesn't have much of a chance. All of these thoughts get compounded when responding to one of the outlying trailer parks like Champion. Engine 7 and TA20 were on the road very quickly and 4-3 reported on scene that there was no fire showing but smoke was pushing from the structure. At that time the plan changed from defense to offense. Upon arrival, the crew from E7 stretched a hose to the door, forced entry, ventilated, and entered the structure to search for victims and the fire. When the crew entered the trailer it was quickly realized it was vacant since there was no furniture or any contents. Fire was located in the first room breeching the wall at the floor and ceiling level. Crews then ventilated the windows to clear some of the smoke once the wet stuff was on the red stuff. The hose was pulled into the hallway as fire was also found in the corner of the utility space at the floor running up to the ceiling. Fire could still be heard popping and snapping overhead as it tried to hold its ground despite being drowned with the 1 3/4 line using Class A foam. The crews pulled the ceilings and walls locating and killing the remaining flames and doing a complete overhaul. The fire is under investigation by St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team.
