An early morning storage shed fire behind the Canton VFW could have been much worse without the quick actions taken by Canton Fire members. At 0616 St. Lawrence County Central Dispatch dropped the tones for a reported storage shed fire at the rear of the Canton VFW. Chief Bob Crowe and Assistant Chief Brian McCluskey were enroute immediately and, based on the smoke in the air, knew they had a working fire. Chief Crowe arrived on scene to find a fully involved storage shed at the rear of the VFW along with extension to an adjacent gazebo and a maintenance garage/storage building on the other side of a chain link fence. The siding on the rear of the VFW was melting rapidly and approaching ignition. Chief Crowe established command and assigned Chief McCluskey to operations. Engine 6 was advised to catch a hydrant north of the incident and lay 5 inch LDH to the scene. First arriving crews stretched a 2 ½" handline to knockdown the fire in the exposures to prevent any further extension. A second 2 ½" handline was placed on the initial fire building and quickly knocked down the fire. Exposure buildings were check to make sure that all fire was extinguished. Members of the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team were requested to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Once the investigation was completed, members performed a complete overhaul of the fire building to ensure the fire was completely out. All units were back in service at 0917 hours.
