March 8, 2007

UTICA, NY FEBRUARY 8, 2007: The Fire Service Women of New York State, Inc. in partnership with the Utica Fire Department announce plans for a week long summer fire camp. This camp, to be held at the Utica Fire Department training academy, will take place July 8 - July 14. The camp will provide 24 youth, aged 14 - 19, with the opportunity to spend a week living and training in a real, working, emergency response setting. Campers will experience team building exercises, learn the basics of engine and ladder company operations, search and rescue skills, fitness and nutrition information, extrication, CPR training, live fire training and an aerial ladder climb. This program, which is modeled after a successful program in the Pacific Northwest will be the first of its kind in the Northeast. Application forms are available by calling (845)309-1325 or may be downloaded from our website, www.fswnys.org .

In order to qualify for Phoenix Fire Camp applicants should be in good physical condition, covered by medical insurance, have a positive attitude and agree to follow all rules and regulations and to participate in all activities and classes. In addition applicants must write a 500 word essay and submit a $25.00 fee. If accepted to the program the only cost to the participant will be transportation to and from the Utica Fire Department Training Academy.

The application deadline is April 15, 2007.
