Central Dispatch activated the tones at 2228 hours for Tower 1 to respond to a structure fire on Trinity Avenue in Gouverneur. The tower was enroute 4 minutes later with Engine 8 following shortly thereafter. The 23 minute response put Canton units on scene just before 2300 hours. Gouverneur IC Assistant Chief Tom Conklin positioned the tower next to GFD Truck 2 to utilize it for master stream operations. The building, a multi-unit balloon frame two story apartment house, was well involved in the attic and second floor upon our arrival. Several draft sites and an extensive tanker shuttle operation was utilized to supplement the municipal water supply for the fire fight. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down during defensive operations, members returned to the interior to perform overhaul operations to ensure that the fire was extinguished. Twelve fire departments operated at the scene with several others on fill in assignments. The 16 member Canton Fire contingent was led by Assistant Chiefs Bob Crowe and Brian McCluskey. All Canton units were back in service at 0449 hours with Gouverneur Fire remaining on scene for several more hours.
