At 1202, Central Dispatch dropped the tones for a possible house fire at 5 Goodrich Street. Neighbors heard the smoke detectors sounding and noticed smoke coming from an attic vent at the front of the house. Assistant Chief Crowe arrived on scene within minutes to find smoke issuing from the vent and and the eaves of the house and upgraded the call to a working fire. Entry was made to do a quick primary search of the first floor. Neighbors reported that all the occupants of the house were gone. Engine 6 arrived at 1208, caught the hydrant and Goodrich and Judson and laid in with 5" LDH. Just prior to the hose lines entering the house the fire broke through a second floor window. Initial attack teams ascended to the second floor, gained access to the bedroom and knocked the fire down rapidly. Tower 1 was positioned in the driveway to open up the gable end of the house and ventilate the attic. Engine 8 stood by at a second hydrant in front of the old county correctional facility.Potsdam Fire was requested to the scene with their cascade system as Canton's went out of service when Rescue 1 was sold. An extensive overhaul and salvage operation ensued to check for extension and minimize any further damage to the structure. An agressive and coordinated interior attack by the members limited fire damage to the bedroom of origin. Subsequent investigation by the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team pinpointed the origin as an electrical junction box in the ceiling above the bedroom. Morley Fire and Rennselaer Falls Fire were placed on standby at their stations. All units were back in service at 1436.
