Canton Fire Stays Busy on Mother's Day

By Firefighter/AEMT-I Eric Walraven
May 9, 2010

Early in the morning on Mother's day, Canton Fire Department was dispatched for a Mutual Aid request for Morley Fire Department for Engine, Tankers, and SCBA certified personell to the Morley Long Branch for a Working Structure Fire. Upon arrival of Canton units a well involved structure was found with Morely FD units all ready working interior operations at the Long Branch. Canton Engine 8 was ordered to draft from the river at Morley fire station and their SCBA personell were requested to assist in interior operations with Morley firefighters. Upon entering the structure Canton firefighters found a heavy smoke condition and began to open up interior walls and ceilings to find a heavy amount of fire already working in the ceiling space above the kitchen area. After an intense battle with fire inside of the structure all units were ordered to exit the building due to an increasing amount of fire throughout the structure. Two Canton firefighters were requested to return to Canton Station to retrieve Tower Ladder 1 to set up a master stream operation to extinguish the major seat of the fire which was eventually extinguished.

After an extensive amount of overhaul, Canton fire fighters were just getting done getting all equipment back together when another set of tones was dropped for Canton Fire to respond Mutual Aid to Pierrepont Fire for a confirmed working structure fire on the Post Road in Pierrepont. PPFD Chief Filiatrault requested Canton for all available man power to the scene and Engine 8, Tanker 20 and Rescue 1 were immediately en route from Morely headed to Pierrepont. Upon arrival of Canton Fire, smoke was found showing from a 2 story wood frame residence with PPFD units already going to work. Engine 8's crew was immediately requested by PPFD 35-4 to go interior and search for the seat of the fire with an 1-3/4" hoseline to the 2nd floor. Upon gaining entry into the 2nd floor Canton firefighters found a room and contents fire seated in a mattress with heavy extension into the walls and attic space. Initial searches by CFD and PPFD assisted with Potsdam fire, found all homeowners out of the house, but multiple family pets had been trapped inside and had not survived the heavy amount of smoke and heat. After all the fire was found and extinguished Canton Fire was ordered to take up and return to quarters for a well deserved rest. The cause of the fire was found to be a malfunctioning space heater in the residence.

Unfortunately, The rest was not long when Canton Fire was back on the road again rolling out to a possible smoke condition in a residence on CR 27. All intial searches for any fire was found negative at this residence and the cause was unknown. CFD was again dispatched to a Fire Alarm Activation at SLU property at Jenks hall, no fire conditions found and the alarm was reset. The day was not yet over when Canton Fire was dispatched again to SLU Property, this time at Dean Eaton Residence Hall for a confirmed smoke condition with a possible fire in a dorm room. Upon arrival of 3rd Assistant Chief McCluskey, the fire was found to be extinguished but a heavy smoke condition was still present. Assistant Chief McCluskey requested Rescue 1 along with Engine 7 for PPV Fans to eject the smoke from the residence hall. After the smoke condition had dispersed, Canton units were finally able to take up for the last time on Mother's day and return home to family to celebrate what was left of the day. No firefighter or civilian injuries were found all day, and a great job was done by all Canton firefighters and mutual aid companies who had been out all day.

Units: Engine 8 (Gavin), Engine 6 (Bennett), Engine 7 (Dalton), Rescue 1 (Grandaw), Tanker 20 (Lawrence), Tower Ladder 1 (Johnson)

Mutual Aid: Given to: Pierrepont FD and Morley FD
