By Firefighter/EMT Eric Walraven
February 27, 2010

Early Saturday morning the tones dropped for Canton Fire to respond to a possible garage fire on the Finnegan Road. 2nd Assistant Chief Erik Johnson and 3rd Assistant Chief Brian McCluskey immediately responded to the Finnegan Road. Within minutes Assistant Chief Johnson arrived on scene and reported heavy smoke conditions along the Finnegan Road making visibility nearly 0 along the road, as well as requesting mutual aid from both West Potsdam Fire and Morley Fire for manpower and tankers. Initial reports by the Assistant Chiefs were that they had heavy smoke pushing out of a 1 story unattached garage with multiple additions added onto it. The owner's residence not threatened by the fire. Upon the arrival of Engine 6, firefighters stretched two 1-3/4" attack lines and entered the garage. Firefighters immediately encountered heavy fire conditions upon entering the structure, as well as numerous pockets of fire and heavy smoke conditions throughout the entire garage. The seat of the fire was quickly knocked down by Engine 6's crew and, along with manpower from West Potsdam and Morley Fire departments, short work was made of overhaul. No fire related injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the St Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team.

Units: Engine 6, Engine 8, Tanker 20, Rescue 1, Ambulance 13X

Mutual Aid: Morley Fire, West Potsdam Fire
