Application Process

Regular Membership

The application process for regular membership in the Canton Fire Department is fairly simple and straighforward. First you must determine if you are eligible to apply.

Eligible requirements are as follows:

1. You must be 17 years of age when your application is voted on.

2. You must be a resident of the Town of Canton or you must reside within 8 miles of the Municipal Building and work in the Village of Canton.

3. You will be required to pass a physical examination by the department physician to ensure you are physically capable of performing the duties of a member.

If you are eligible, then you can fill out the application. You can pick one up at the Fire Station or you can get one online here. The completed application should be returned to the Fire Station before the first Thursday of the month so it can be read to the membership at the monthly meeting. Once the application is read, it is turned over to an investigating committee who will check your references and schedule an interview within the month. Once the interview has been completed, the committee will present their findings to the membership at the next monthly meeting, and your application will be voted on. If approved, you will be notified and your application will be presented to the Village Board for approval at their meeting on the third Monday of the month.

Mutual Aid Status

The application process is similar for those looking to provide assistance to us on an ongoing basis under mutual aid as provided for in the General Municipal Law Section 209 i. You must be a member of a NYS Fire Department in order to take advantage of this route to give your time. You can get an application at the Fire Station or get one online here. You must complete an application and be interviewed in the same time frame as outlined above. The main difference is that your name is not submitted to the Village Board and you are not able to participate in department business meetings. In addition, a letter of recommendation from your current fire chief is required.
