All week long the Canton Fire Department has been celebrating Fire Prevention Week with station tours with Banford School Pre K and Kindergarten students. In school assemblies with first through forth grades, all grades learned about having two ways out, creating a meeting place, sysying low (smoke goes up so we go down), when to call 911, and most of all what a firefighter looks and sounds like. Third grade students demonstrated how to crawl low and going to their meeting place. Fourth graders demonstrated how to feel for heat on their bedroom door before opening it and knowing what to do if their bedroom window is on a second floor. On Friday morning five lucky students won a ride to school in a fire truck. The contest consisted of a fire safety questionnaire that the students filled out with their parents and returned to school for the drawing. The week concluded with 911 dispatching Canton Fire and Rescue with Canton Police to the school for a drill and the students saw the trucks respond with lights and sirens, firefighters set up the firetrucks and retiring teacher Ms. Massia becoming an honorary firefighter for the day.
