Members of the Canton Fire Department have completed their final modules in the Hazardous Materials Technician level courses. This offering is comprised of 5 modules ranging from 8 hours to 24 hours for a total of almost 84 hours of training. The completion of this training required students to travel to both the State Fire Academy in Montour Falls and to the St. Lawrence County Fire Training Center in West Potsdam. Skills learned include the proper donning/doffing of chemical protective clothing, identifying and detecting hazardous environments, risk-based analysis, planning a response, and then appropriate defensive and offensive techniques in mitigating certain hazards. Members from various agencies around St. Lawrence County were in attendance including Canton Fire, Hermon Fire, Pyrites Fire, and Massena Fire (career). There was also a St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputy participating in the course. Canton Fire members completing the class were Second Assistant Chief Matthew Kroeger, FF/EMT James Burdick, and FF/EMT Matthieu Cote.

Congratulations to all those that attended the class and thank you for your continued service to your community.
