Canton Fire was dispatched at 1759 hours for a fire alarm activation at the ATO Fraternity House, 72 Park Street. Fire Chief Bob Crowe arrived on scene at 1804 hours to find the occupants evacuated from the building. SLU Security Sergeant Don Corbine advised that there was a fire in an upstairs bedroom and he thought he had gotten it out with a fire extinguisher. Chief Crowe requested a retone for a reported fire and then proceeded to the second floor bedroom to confirm the fire had been extinguished. Engine 6 arrived and deployed a ventilation fan to clear the smoke from the second floor of the building. The subsequent investigation revealed that the occupant of the bedroom had been smoking in violation of university policy and had discarded ashes in the trash basket at the foot of his bed approximately 30 minutes before the fire alarm sounded. He had also covered a smoke detector, which delayed the operation of the fire alarm system. Fire damage was limited to the two trash baskets, the wall immediately adjacent, the bed frame, and a tapestry that was hanging on the wall. Fire Protection Specialist Christopher Taylor, with the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, was requested to the scene as well to inspect the damage prior to turning the building back over to the university. One patient was transported by Canton Rescue for treatment of smoke inhalation. All units were back in service at 1926 hours.
