Canton Fire and Rescue were dispatched at 0948 hours to 139 CR 35 to assist Forest Rangers from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation with an illegal outside fire. Engine 7 and Tanker 20 were enroute shortly thereafter. On arrival, units found an old garage that had been knocked down into a pile and set ablaze. The Rangers on scene requested that the fire be extinguished. Personnel initially placed the master stream in operation to knock down a large body of the fire. They subsequently stretched handlines and began to pull the pile apart to get at the deep seated fire. Mutual aid was requested from Pierrepont and West Potsdam for tankers to provide water to supply the operation. After more than an hour and a half of work and over 15000 gallons of water the fire was extinguished. All personnel were back in service at 1218 hours with no injuries. The homeowner was issued a citation for illegal burning by the NYS Environmental Conservation Officer on scene.
