On September 25th, members of Canton Fire and Rescue participated in the annual Safety Day at St. Lawrence University. The day included an information table in the Student Center along with Fire Protection Specialist Chris Taylor of the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control to provide the SLU community with fire safety information. A room was filled with artificial smoke and students were encouraged to try an navigate the room to see what it would be like should a fire occur. "Drunk Goggles" representing various levels of intoxication were also available for students to use to see how much more difficult it would be to try to navigate while under the influence. At noon time, a mock dorm room burn was done to demonstrate the power of fire and how quickly it can engulf a room. This event was well attended and, given the comments from many of the students, had its desired effect of opening they eyes of the students to the dangers they face from fire. Later in the afternoon a simulated DWI accident took place on Millennium Way to show the devastating effects that can occur in a DWI accident. It was a very informative day and has become an annual event that both the SLU community and Canton Fire and Rescue look forward to putting on.
