At 1521 on a bright and sunny but cold March Sunday afternoon the tones dropped for Engine, Tanker, Manpower mutual aid to DeKalb at 2974 Co. Rt. 17. On arrival crews found a 2 story wood frame home with heavy smoke pushing from the second floor and the eaves. The fire on the first floor was knocked down already by crews from DeKalb, and Hermon with some early assistance from Captain Tim Gavin and FF Scott McGregor. Canton crews joined with a team from Rensselaer Falls to ladder the second floor and make entry. Upon entering the structure it was found to have heavy fire still in the attic area on two sides of the house. Progress was hindered by walls and ceilings made from sheet rock on top of tongue and groove. Using hand tools and chainsaws the fire was slowly exposed and extinguished. Rescue 1 and Tower 1 were also called for to assist with cascade and roof vent ops. No injuries were reported and the cause was listed as a kitchen fire. Tower 1 ran into some trouble as one of the rear dual tire treads separated causing some minor body damage.
