Crews from Canton Fire Rescue and Pyrites Fire spent their Friday night engaged in a tough fight with a stubborn fire in a trailer at 177 North Woods Road in Pyrites. The call went out at 1726 sending all of Pyrites equipment to the scene and Canton's crew on Engine 8 to the Beaver pond on CR 21 to set up draft initially. The limited manpower was able to hold down a significant portion of the fire while the draft crew cut through over 30 inches of ice on the pond with chain saws and axes to establish draft. Crews pushed cautiously into the trailer having to fight the fire while standing on the concrete pad and steel members of the trailer frame as the floor had been burned away. Rapidly dropping sub-zero temperatures hampered the operation and caused some stiff frozen gear and numb hands once the fire was finally knocked down. All equipment and personnel were placed back in service with no injuries. The cause of the fire was due to efforts to keep waterlines from freezing under the trailer.
